So….I don’t know if you know this or not, but our Elf is kinda a big deal around here….

He likes to stay on trend with the latest fashion and what not.

And you know as well as I that folks can’t get enough of these. (Mad props to MJ’s Off the Hook, I feel like her pattern started the craze!)

So…he messages me last week asking how much I’d charge to make him a shark blanket. Of course, I HAD to say free…he’s got connections with the Big Guy in the red suit and all, and I’ve got kids…so..ya get it.

I literally cannot wait to bring our Shelf Elf back tonight, and this adorable shark blanket cocoon (and my smiling gaggle of tiny faces of course) is the reason! He’s a good Elf, so he insisted I share the pattern with all of you, so your Elves can also be hip, cool, and connected! And…if you’re wondering, YES, the Elf is hand crocheted. It’s a free pattern courtesy of the Dapper Toad and is a free through RAVELRY HERE!

This quick little adorable shark cocoon can be made in just a day and uses just a bit of regular old worsted weight yarn. You probably even have these colors in your stash! So, let’s hop to it!

The pattern starts just below, and when you are done, our Elf has asked that you show off on the FACEBOOK PAGE HERE!!. He’s talking about brownie points with the big guy and stuff, so I’m just gonna do what he asks over here. Just tryin’ not to ruffle feathers.

Feel free to share the picture, share the link, and sell what you make, but please don’t copy and repost anything anywhere..Santa is watching closely 😉

The Pattern Starts Here:

Materials:

– worsted weight yarn such in the following colors:

(40) yards medium gray

(10) yards or less of each red, white, and black

– size G (4.0mm) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge

– tapestry needle to weave in ends

Finished Dimensions:

Sized to fit Elf, Barbie type doll, or other similar size doll.

9 ¾” long (teeth to tail) x 6 ¾” wide (side fin tip to side fin tip)

Gauge:

While not critical, you want it to be similar and not have large holes, so do measure

10 rows = 2”

10 stitches = 2”

Instructions:

Tail:

*When you see BLO after any stitch, this indicates you ONLY work in the BACK LOOP, or the loop further from you out of the two. When you see FLO, this indicates you ONLY work in the FRONT LOOP, or the loop closer to you out of the two.

With gray, Chain 13:

Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook and next 3 chs, hdc in nxt 4 chs, dc in last 4 ch. (12 sts)

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), turn, dcblo in nxt 3 sts, hdcblo in nxt 4 sts, scblo in last 4 sts.

Row 3: ch 1, turn, scflo in 1st 4 sts, hdcflo on nxt 4 sts, scflo in nxt 2 sts, leave 2 remaining sts unworked. (10 sts)

Row 4: ch 1, turn, scblo in 1st 2 sts, hdcblo in nxt 4 sts, scblo in last 4 sts. (10 sts)

Row 5: ch 1, turn, scflo in 1st 4 sts, hdcflo in nxt 4 sts, 2 dcflo in each of the nxt 2 stitches (note: this is an increase, working 2 stitches in each stitch). (12 sts)

Row 6: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), turn, dcblo in nxt 3 sts, hdcblo in nxt 4 sts, scblo in last 4 sts. (12 sts)

Edge Round: ch 1, do not turn, work 1 sc in the end of each row across the top of the tail, 3 at the corner, 1sc in each remaining loop down the side, 2 sc around the post of each dc across the bottom, 3 sc at the corner, 1 sc back up the side in each stitch, make 2 in the last corner and sl st to the 1st sc made of the edge round. Do not tie off.

Carry on for Body: Do not turn any of the rounds on the body. Do not join any rounds on the body. With the right side of the tail facing you, look at the small top edge of the tail and the sc you worked across. Find the center 6 sc.

Rnd 1: sc in the front loop only of those 6 sc, now flip the tail around and sc in the remaining back loop of each of those same 6 sc. (you now have 12 sc in a round that we will continue to build off of for the body of the shark and no parts to seam together here later J

Rnd 2:  2 sc in the 1st sc, sc in nxt 5 sc, 2 sc in nxt sc, sc in nxt 5 sc. (14 sc)

Rnd 3:`(sc in nxt sc, 2 sc in nxt sc) 7 times total. (21 sc)

Rnd 4-7: sc in each sc around. (21 sc)

Rnd 8: (sc in nxt 2 sc, 2 sc in nxt sc) 7 times total. (28 sc)

Rnd 9: sc in each sc around. (28 sc)

Rnd 10: (sc in nxt 3 sc, 2 sc in nxt sc) 7 times total. (35 sc)

Rnd 11-30: sc in each sc around, after round 30, sl st to next sc and tie off.  (35 sc)

Rnd 31:(gums) with right side facing, join red with a sl st in any scblo around, ch 1, scblo in same sc and in each sc around, sl st to 1st scblo made, tie off. (35 sc)

Rnd 32:(teeth) with right side facing, join white with a sl st to any scblo, sl st in nxt scblo, ch 2, sl st in the sl st back into the back loop of round 31, *sl st in nxt 2 sts, ch 2, sl st in the same scblo of round 31, repeat from * around, there will be one odd stitch remaining, sl st across that scblo and then st st to the 1st sl st made and tie off.

Side Fins: (Make 2)

With gray, leave a longer starting tail to seam to body later, and ch 7:

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (6 sc)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.

Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc decrease over 1st 2 sc, sc in nxt 2 sc, sc decrease over last 2 sc. (4 sc)

Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.

Row 5: ch 1, turn, (sc decrease over next 2 sc) two times total. (2 sc)

Row 6: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc. (2 sc)

Edge Round: Rnd 7: do not tie off, make sure right side is facing still, and sc around the post of the sc at the end of each row, 3 sc at the corner, 1 sc in each remaining loop of the beginning chain across the bottom, 3 sc in the next corner, sc around the post of the stitch at the end of each row up the other side, 2 sc in the last row end, then sl st to the 1st sc made, and tie off.

Now, making sure the right side of the edging row is facing up, use the tail and the photo as a guide and stitch one fin to either side of the body.

Point Fin:

With gray, make a magic circle (if you do not want to do this, replace with the traditional ch-2, working round 1 in the 2nd chain from the hook), do not join or turn rounds on the fin.

Rnd 1: make 4 sc in the ring

Rnd 2: sc in each sc around.

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt sc, 2 sc in nxt sc) two times total. (6 sc)

Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 2 sc, 2 sc in nxt sc) two times total. (8 sc)

Rnd 5: (sc in nxt sc, 2 sc in nxt sc) four times total. (12 sc)

Rnd 6: (sc in nxt 2 sc, 2 sc in nxt sc) four times total. (16 sc)

Rnd 7-9 sc in each sc around, after row 9, sl st to next sc and tie off leaving tail to seam to body.

Now, stitch to the body, using the photo as a guide.

Eyes: (make 2)

With black, make a magic circle:

Rnd 1: make 6 sc in ring, sl st to 1st sc made, tie off, leave tail to stitch to body.

Now, with white, stitch a small stitch in the center of each eye for the pupil and knot behind the eye (never to be seen again), then stitch on eye to either side of the face, using the photo as a guide.

Weave in all tails!

    • All you need to do for that is to eliminate the fins and eyes, and people have been turning this into that! I saw a crocheter’s work who had done that with Red Heart Unforgettable and it was so pretty!

  1. In row 11-30 of the body it says SC in each SC around then it says tie off after round 35? Is this a mistake? Is there 30 rows or 35? Thanks

    • Hey there! Great eye and thank you for messaging, it is in fact 30 rounds, the 35 came from the number of stitches in the round and a lack of coffee! Will update that now, good catch!

      • Hi! I’m not sure I completely understand what you are asking me but if I am I understanding correctly then yes 35 is the number of single crochet that you will have at the end of every round. That is the stitch count so you can check your work as you go 🙂

  2. Hi! I am having trouble starting the round part of the pattern. I’ve looked on youtube but I don’t see anything that will help. On the Rnd1 after Carry on for Body, I just can’t seem to figure out how to flosc 6 stitches one way, and then go blo6 stitches and create the round resulting in 12 stitches. Can you help me out?

    • Hi! Yes, I can 🙂 when you have completed the edging round for the tail end, you are left with stitches across the top. First, identify the 5 most center of them. Now, single crochet in the front loop only of those 6 sc. Then, turn the tail around and work a single crochet in the BACK loop only that is remaining. This creates 12 sc in those 6 stitches. One front loop single crochet and one back loop single crochet in each stitch. Then you will continue on working these 12 stitches to work the body. I hope this helps you, thank you so much!

    • There is not a video, but if you PM me on Facebook on the Crochetverse page or on Ravelry, also Crochetverse, I can give you a hand!

    • I am so sorry, I do not, but if you are interested, PM me on my Facebook page “Crochetverse” and I can hook you up with someone who I trust to do custom work, Thank you!
