Fast and Free Ragdoll Piggy Crochet Pattern

I have four boys total, two of whom are younger…SO when I made the elephant ragdoll yesterday (find him here: https://crochetverse.com/elephant-ragdoll/), he was immediately claimed by the older! (He shared, but man oh man…he wanted him for his own!)

So, today, I made a second to be claimed by the younger! This cute little PIGGY!

Quite fitting because I am literally obsessed with his little piggy toes!

Piggy is just as fast as the elephant, just an hour or two and some blanket yarn and you are off and running! He is made in almost all one piece and I didn’t even weave the ends! Just hid them inside as I worked the join round!!

MATERIALS:

– Size N (9mm) crochet hook (used for ALL but tail)

– Size I (5.5mm) crochet hook (used ONLY for tail)

– Super bulky (size 6) yarn in the following amounts and colors:

100 yards pink (Shown: Bernat Blanket Brights in Pixie Pink)

40 yards gray (Shown: Bernat Blanket in Pale Gray)

10 yards yellow (Shown: Bernat Blanket Brights in School Bus Yellow)

– About 10 yards standard worsted weight yarn in black for the features

– Small amount fiberfill stuffing

– Basic tool kit (scissors, tapestry needle, tape measure)

GAUGE:

While not imperative, be sure you work your stitches tightly so that the stuffing does not peek through the work. I tend to be an average to tight crocheter. If you are on the looser side, you may need to go down a hook size or two.

FINISHED SIZE:

About 18” tall x 15” wide

CREATE ARMS: (Repeat for each panel)

Right Side Arm: (When looking at the panel)

Position the body panel so the head (row 26 end) is furthest from you, join the pink yarn with a sl st in the END OF ROW 11 from the side. You are working in the ends of the rows around the body of the last sc at the edge.

Row 1: ch 1, sc in same row end and next 2 row ends (row 12 & 13). (3)

Row 2-4: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. (3)

Row 5: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, at the final yarn over of the last sc, yarn over and pull through with the gray yarn to change colors, tie off pink. (3)

Row 6-7: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, tie of after row 7. (3)

Left Side Arm:

Position panel as shown in the image below and join the pink yarn with a sl st in the end of row 13.

Row 1: ch 1, sc in the same row end and nxt 2 row ends (12 & 11). (3)

Row 2-4: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. (3)

Row 5: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, at the final yarn over of the last sc, yarn over and pull through with the gray yarn to change colors, tie off pink. (3)

Row 6-7: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, tie off after row 7. (3)

CREATE LEGS: (Repeat for each panel)

First Leg:

Position the panel so row 1 of the main body panel is furthest from you and join pink yarn with a sl st in the right most st on the end:

Row 1: ch 1, sc in the same st and nxt 2 sts. (3)

Row 2-3: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (3)

Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, at final yarn over/ pull through of last sc, change to gray and tie off pink. (3)

Row 5-6: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, tie off after row 6. (3)

Second Leg:

Flip the panel over and join the pink with a sl st in the right corner end stitch again:

Rows 1-6: Repeat exactly as for leg 1.

CREATE SNOUT: (Repeat for each panel)

Position the panel as shown and join the pink with a sl st around the end of row 19:

Row 1: ch 1, sc in around the end of the same row and nxt 3 rows. (4)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, tie off. (4)

CREATE TAIL (Make 1)

With the I hook and pink yarn, chain 8:

Row 1: 3 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, 3 sc in each rem chain, tie off leaving a tail to seam to body. (21)

You can enhance the curl of the tail by winding and twisting into shape.

CREATE EARS (Make 4):

Ear Panel:

With pink, chain 5:

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch. (4)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (4)

Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, sc dec over nxt 2 sts, sc in last st. (3)

Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (3)

Row 5: ch 1, sc dec over all 3 sc at once, just like a regular sc dec, just add one more in (there will be 4 loops on the hook before the final yarn over pull through of the decrease). (1)

Row 6: ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, tie off. (1)

Join:

Lay 2 of the ear panels on top of each other, we will be single crocheting through BOTH ear pieces at once to join them together, join the pink yarn with a sl st in the position shown in the image, the bottom right corner:

I DID NOT weave in my ends, I simply tied them in a knot to the nearby tail from each panel, trimmed them to about 2”, and tucked them inside the ear as I worked the join round.

Round 1: ch 1, sc around the same row end and nxt 5 row ends, make 3 sc in the sc at the top (from row 6), sc in each of the row ends down the 2nd side, make 2 sc in the 1st st on row 1, sc in the nxt 2 st, make 2 sc in the last st and sl st to the 1st sc made, tie off leaving a long tail to seam to head.

JOIN THE TWO MAIN PANELS:

We will crochet the two main panels together, just as we did for the ears; working a single crochet though both pieces at the same time to join.

The ends of the feet and arms need to be joined in gray, so at the pink stitch JUST PRIOR to the gray stitches, I performed the final yarn over with the gray and dropped the pink. DO NOT cut the pink, I placed it between and inside the two pieces and then when I was at the other side of the hand/foot, I cut the gray and picked back up the pink. The image shows just prior to picking up the pink that was laid between the pieces:

I DID NOT weave in my ends. I simply knotted them to a nearby tail and tucked them in as I worked the join round around.

GENTLY stuff the piece as you join. A ragdoll should have a little body, but remain floppy. Do not overstuff your ragdoll ?

JOIN ROUND:

You will join the yarn around the spot marked “start” inserting the hook through BOTH panels that you have laid upon each other matched. Work 1 single crochet in each stitch and end of row around, at the corners of the feet/hands/snout I worked 3 sc to round the corner and not pucker the work.

The image shows the direction of the join round and the spots where I worked 3 sc instead of just one. When completely around, sl st to the 1st sc made and tie off.

CREATE BOW:

With yellow, chain 4:

Row 1:  3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in nxt ch, 6 sc in the last chain, now go to the opposite unworked side of the beginning chain and sl st in the nxt loop, 3 sc in the last loop, sl st to 1st sc made, tie off leaving a long tail.

Using a tapestry needle, weave the long tail end to the center. Wrap it around a 3-4 times, then knot it to enhance the bow shape.

ASSEMBLE:

*View main photo to assist in placement*

  1. Stitch on ears: Using the tail from one ear, stitch it to the front of the head at row 1. Position it according to the photos, just left of center and slightly above midway of the head. Seam on the other ear on the opposite side of the head, you will want to position this one slightly higher than the other, so you can see it peeking out from the front.
  2. Seam on tail: Using the tail from the tail, stitch it to the join round on the left side of the body.
  3. Stitch on features: Take care to not tug the stitches too tightly, the blanket yarn is lofty and it will hide them within if you do. Each feature is done double so it is more prominent. Use the black yarn and stitch on the eye, eyebrow, smile, and two small lines for the nostrils on the snout.
  4. Stitch on bow: At the neck for a boy, On the front ear for a girl.
  5. Weave in any remaining ends.
