Many months ago, while working on a project, I “from memory” tried to jot down a written pattern for the Virus Blanket as I *thought* it was supposed to be done…Well, upon inspection, I see I was pretty wrong lol! BUT, that was NOT a bad thing! Mine is NOT quite the same as the Virus Shawl or Blanket as you might know it. Maybe a little beautiful shells, maybe a little fluffy meringue mixed in?
Hence….I am calling this the:
Virus “Sort Of” Blanket Pattern
There, to my knowledge, is not a known originator to the true Virus shawl, it began with a chart that has been online for many years. Many have adapted the stitch pattern for their own use. I love my accidental pattern and it works up FAST! Grow it to ANY size by repeating just few rounds!
Now I am passing it on to you as a little variation to spice up your crochet life!
If you’ll notice, the center is different; more pronounced and open than what you might be used to seeing. The “spokes” as I term them stand out more as well!
Super pretty, super easy, and once you establish the pattern; you repeat the same few rows over and over until you reach the size you desire. It could be tiny or a monstrosity, your choice!
It is a perfect square in construction. My sample is created using Red Heart Super Saver Stripes in Fruity Stripe. I crochet fairly tightly. Using a G(4mm) hook, one repeat though rounds 1-10 and one more round 7, left my piece measuring about 14″ across.
You can use any yarn with the appropriate hook size. Because the stitching pattern is open, I find that, to me, it looks best when fairly tightly stitched. Keep that in mind when choosing a hook to pair with your yarn.
Let’s do it:
My testers and myself love working to make my free pattern offerings easy to understand and enjoyable to follow. Please do not copy and past this anywhere. Chain 6 loosely, sl st to 1st chain made to form a ring. *Mark 1st st of each round to keep track, do not turn.
Rnd 1: ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), make 23 more dc in the ring, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (24) *Push the sts tightly together as you work so they all fit in the ring, it’s a tight fit, but it will work*
Rnd 2: ch 3, dc in nxt st, ch 8, sk nxt 4 sts, *dc in nxt 2 sts, ch 8, sk nxt 4 sts, repeat from *, two times more, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (8 dc and four ch-8 sps)
Rnd 3: ch 3, dc in nxt dc, ch 1, 10 dc in the nxt ch-8 sp, ch 1, *dc in the nxt 2 dc, ch 1, 10 dc in the nxt ch-8 sp, ch 1, repeat from *, two times more, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (48 dc, chains not counted)
Rnd 4: ch 3, dc in nxt dc, ch 1, (dc in the nxt dc, ch 1) 10 times, *dc in the nxt 2 dc, ch 1, (dc in the nxt dc, ch 1) 10 times, repeat from *, two times more, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (48 dc, chains not counted)
Rnd 5: ch 3, dc in nxt dc, ch 1, (dc in the nxt dc, ch 2) 9 times, dc in nxt dc, ch 1, *dc in the nxt 2 dc, ch 1, (dc in the nxt dc, ch 2) 9 times, dc in the nxt dc, ch 1, repeat from *, two times more, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (48 dc, chains not counted)
NOTE: You will likely have some “ruffling” of the work at this point.
This is normal to these types of stitch pattern and will flatten out as you work more rounds. In addition, a gentle blocking of the work when you are done will finish it off nice and flat.
Rnd 6: ch 3, dc in nxt dc, ch 8, sk nxt 2 dc, sc in the nxt ch-2 sp, (ch 3, sk nxt 2 dc, sc in nxt ch-2 sp) 3 times, ch 8, sk nxt 2 dc, *dc in nxt 2 dc, ch 8, sk nxt 2 dc, sc in nxt ch-2 sp, (ch-3, sk nxt 2 dc, sc in nxt ch-2 sp) 3 times, ch 8, sk nxt 2 dc, repeat from * around, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (eight ch-8 spaces and twelve ch-3 spaces as a check point)
MUST READ BEFORE DOING NEXT ROUNDS, DO NOT SKIP:
The “CORNER” is defined as the 2dc right next to each other that line up in a “spoke” design as you progress.
NOTE*: The 1st time through, round 7-9 will not utilize the “repeats until the next corner is reached”. You will be at the corner. This is done so the rounds can be repeated easily. Each subsequent repeat of these rounds, however, will need the repeats. Do not be confused by this.
There are many repeats of sections. Be aware of the symbols used so you know which parts are to be repeated and where. There are *, **, (), {}, and {{}} used.
Rnd 7: ch 3, dc in nxt dc, ch 1, 10 dc in nxt ch-8 sp, ch 1, *sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 1, 10 dc in nxt ch-8 sp, ch 1, repeat from * until the next corner is reached (no repeat needed on 1st time through), then, **dc in nxt 2 dc, ch 1, 10 dc in the nxt ch-8 sp, ch 1, (sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 1, 10 dc in nxt ch-8 sp, ch 1) repeat ( – ) until the next corner is reached (no repeat needed on 1st time through), then repeat from ** around, when the final corner 2dc is reached, sl st to top of beg ch-3.
Rnd 8: ch 3, dc in nxt dc, ch 1, (dc in nxt dc, ch 1) 10 times, {sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 1, (dc in nxt dc, ch 1) 10 times}, repeat {-} until next corner is reached (no repeat needed on 1st time through), then, *dc in nxt 2 dc, ch 1, (dc in nxt dc, ch 1) 10 times, {{sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 1, (dc in nxt dc, ch 1) 10 times}}, repeat {{-}} until next 2dc corner is reached (no repeat needed on 1st time through), then repeat from * around, sl st to top of beg ch-3.
Rnd 9: ch 3, dc in nxt dc, ch 1, (dc in nxt dc, ch 2) 9 times, dc in nxt dc, ch 1, {sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 1, (dc in nxt dc, ch 2) 9 times, dc in nxt dc, ch 1}, repeat {-} until nxt corner is reached (no repeat needed on 1st time through) then, *dc in nxt 2 dc, ch 1, (dc in nxt dc, ch 2) 9 times, dc in nxt dc, ch 1, {{sc in nxt ch-3 sp, ch 1, (dc in nxt dc, ch 2) 9 times, dc in nxt dc, ch 1}}, repeat from {{-}} until next corner is reached (no repeat needed on 1st time through), then repeat from * around, sl st to top of beg ch-3.
Rnd 10: ch 3, dc in nxt dc, ch 8, sk nxt 2 dc, sc in the nxt ch-2 sp,{ (ch 3, sk nxt 2 dc, sc in the nxt ch-2 sp) 3 times, ch 8, sk nxt 2 dc, skip nxt sc, and skip nxt 2 dc then sc in nxt ch-2 sp}, repeat {-} until 2 dc remain before the nxt 2dc corner, on the last repeat eliminate the final sc and skip the nxt 2 dc, *dc in nxt 2 dc, ch 8, sk nxt 2 dc, sc in nxt ch-2 sp, {{ (ch 3, sk nxt 2 dc, sc in nxt ch-2 sp) 3 times, ch 8, sk nxt 2 dc, skip the nxt sc, skip the nxt 2 dc, sc in nxt ch-2 sp) }}, repeat {{-}} until 2 dc remain before the nxt 2dc corner, eliminate the final sc on the last repeat and skip the nxt 2 dc, repeat from * around, on the final repeat skip the lst sc then skip the last 2 dc and sl st to top of beg ch-3.
TO GROW SIZE: Repeat rounds 7-10 until desired size is reached.
TO END: Repeat round 7 once more after the last repeat desired of round 7-10.
EDGE: work one sc in each st round and chain around and in the chain 3 spaces work 3 sc. In the 10 dc groups, work a picot (chain 3, sl st in the 1st chain of the chain 3 made) in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th dc, sl st to the 1st sc made when back to the beginning and tie off.
As with most virus type style blankets, this has a tendency to need a gentle blocking to get it to lay flat when complete. Dampen in with cool water, squeeze out the excess. Pin it gently shaping and coaxing flat and square using non-rusting pins to any surface you can pin to safely and let it dry. That’s all it will take.
